Summit boys soccer plays pair of champions

How’s this for strength of schedule, the Summit boys soccer team plays back-to-back state championship teams in its next two games. First versus 4A State Champion Sisters @ Summit on Thursday, Sept. 8th. Then they follow that up @ 5A State Champion Hood River Valley on Tuesday September 13th. Heading into those games, the Storm are 3-0 having outscored their opponents 15-3 on the season.

A team format for state tennis would be an improvement

When Bend High knocked off Summit 5-3 in the Class 5A girls tennis dual match championships this past weekend in Bend, it proved that the two best “teams” are here in Bend. But that’s no guarantee that either of them will be winning a state title this year.

With the current format for Oregon high school tennis, the entire season is played as a team sport (with your whole team competing) up until the State tournament, where often top placing teams have just a few players in the tournament.

IMC basketball season starts on Tuesday (1/6/15)

The Intermountain Conference basketball season tips off on Tuesday, when No. 2 Summit (8-1) plays @ No 29 Redmond (2-8).

On the girls side, No. 4 Summit hosts No. 29 Redmond on Tuesday.

Some interesting 5A football state championship game notes

• Silverton is coached by John Mannion, the father of Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion.
• Hermiston has never won a state football championship and is playing in its first-ever state football title game.
• Silverton last won a state football championship in 1991, under coach Robby Robinson.
• The two teams are a combined 23-1 this season, with Hermiston’s only loss coming to Coeur d’Alene of Idaho 31-27 on the road.
• Silverton lost to state-champion West Albany 17-0 in last year’s semifinals.
• Hermiston running back Samuel Colbray is a beast! I remember first hearing about this kid a few years ago from friends in Hermiston… wow, he’s impressive!

Only 4 of top 8 5A boys basketball teams still 5A

Powerhouse Jefferson is not the only boys basketball team to make the move from 5A to 6A this year. Half of the top eight teams made the move up a classification.

Not a single all-state player returns to Class 5A. You could say it’s wide open.

Summit boys & girls would win early season “hypothetical” xc meet

If you are a cross county fan, you need to use the website Athletic.net – it’s pretty awesome! It’s a place where you can see ALL cross country results and one of the cool features is a “hypothetical” cross meet that tells you who would win if every XC team in the state entered a race and all the runners clocked their fastest time of the season.

So with that said, a couple of important points. 1 Summit ran in a very fast early season race. 2 So did other teams, but not all of the top teams in the state. 3 These scores don’t include some of Summit top runners (boys & girls) who haven’t raced yet this year.

With all that, here is the hypothetical results:
