IMC leaving its mark on final year in 5A

The Intermountain Conference will not be the same league it has traditionally been starting in 2018-2019. Bend, Mountain View and Summit are all moving up to Class 6A, while Hermiston is joining a state of Washington league. So it seems fitting that those IMC teams are leaving their mark on Class 5A in their final fall season before reclassification. Here’s how the teams from the IMC faired this fall, which just wrapped up with a Hermiston state football championship.

Hermiston is headed to Washington in 2018

The Bulldogs will join Washington State for all of their high school sports starting with the 2018-2019 school year.

6A or 5A? – Looks like we are going to continue with six classifications in Oregon. It’s not settled, but that seems to be what is wanted, especially at the small school level.

Hermiston in Oregon or Washington? – My gut says Oregon for now, but I bet Hermiston joins a Washington league by 2020. We’ll have an update on June 4. Hermiston is a longtime opponent of the Bend schools and so this would be an interesting change.

What will the fourth high school in Bend mean for sports? – I don’t know yet, but I think it’ll be a great addition! I hope that it is added the same way that Mountain View and Summit were, where it creates new opportunities for athletes and coaches.

What league will the Bend schools end up in? – Right now it looks like either Salem or Portland.

Wrapping up the IMC football season – here’s what you need to know

Just one week remains in the Intermountain Conference football season, then four of the eight teams move on to the Class 5A Oregon playoffs, which this year begin in the round of 16. Four 5A leagues will each send four teams to the playoffs, so who is going from the IMC?

Playoff scenarios going into final week:
Summit (6-0) – Secured their second-straight league title.
Bend (4-2) – Win and they are in with a 5-3 record. Lose and they are tied with Mountain View with a 4-3 record. Mountain View would win the tiebreaker based on head to head. If they lose and Redmond loses they are in as they hold the tiebreaker over the Panthers but don’t over the Hermiston Bulldogs.
Redmond (4-2) – Win and they are in with a 5-3 record. Lose and it could get complicated, see below..
Hermiston (4-2) – Clinched playoff spot with wins over Bend and Mountain View.
Mountain View (3-3) – Can still make the playoffs with a win over Bend high. Lose and they are out.
Pendleton (2-4) – Eliminated. Beating Hermiston would clearly mean a lot, but won’t get them into the playoffs.
Ridgeview (1-5) – Eliminated. A chance to end the season on a high if they can upset crosstown rival Redmond.
Hood River Valley (0-6) – Eliminated. Would have to upset No. 1 Summit to avoid going winless on the season.

What happens with a 4-way tie for 2nd?
It’s possible that Bend, Redmond, Hermiston and Mountain View could all go 4-3. This is unlikely, as Redmond should beat Ridgeview and Hermiston should beat Pendleton. Bend is favored over Mountain View, but that game could go either way. If they all end up 4-3. Hermiston would have the edge over Bend and Mountain View, but not Redmond. Redmond would have the edge over Hermiston and Mountain View but not Bend. Bend would have the edge over Redmond but not Hermiston and Mountain View. So, yeah, I don’t know actually. But I think that Mountain View would be the odd team out? But don’t quote me on that.

The greatest dunk in IMC basketball history

This is J.J. Ross of Hermiston dunking on a full-court, one-bounce alley-oop. I recently said that I though Cam Baker’s dunk against Bend high was the best ever… let’s just say that Cam’s was the best Summit dunk ever.

Bend teams return top XC runners in the state

This is kind of unreal just how loaded the three Bend teams are when compared to the rest of Class 5A. On the boys side… wow, incredible depth! The girls return three of the top four runners, while the boys represent the top eight returners in the state.
