The most successful C.O. HS sport of the past decade?

Do you know what Central Oregon high school sport won the most state championships in the past decade?

The criteria:
• Must be an OSAA sanctioned sport.
• Central Oregon schools (Bend, Mountain View, Summit, Redmond, Ridgeview, Crook County, Madras, Sisters, La Pine, Culver, Gilchrist, Trinity, Central Christian).

A close second place was volleyball with 13 state championships from six different schools. But the winningest sport was wrestling, with 15 titles from three different schools.
Culver has nine wrestling titles in the past decade under coach J.D. Alley and Crook County has five under coach Jake Huffman. The other title came last year from La Pine and coach Aaron Flack.

It is really impressive to have six different Central Oregon schools win state volleyball titles. Crook County tops that list with four under legendary coach Rosie Honl.

C.O. volleyball has been dominant since reclassification

Everything changed in 2006 when it comes to volleyball in Central Oregon. In the 31 seasons prior to reclassification (Oregon held its first volleyball state championship in 1974) C.O. teams won just two state volleyball titles. Culver in 1987 and Sisters in 1996. But in the 11 seasons since Oregon moved to a six class system, C.O. teams have won 16 state titles, including two in 2016. In fact, a C.O. volleyball has won at least one state title every season since 2006.

18 State titles have been won overall, Leading the way is Crook County with eight state titles. The Cowgirls are followed by Sisters (5), Culver (2), Summit (2) and Bend (1)

Since 2011, a Central Oregon football team has won a state championship in every odd year. So I guess they are due!

Summit @ Crook County on Tuesday night at 6pm repents a battle of two of Central Oregon’s best volleyball teams over the past decade.

In fact, checkout all of the state championship volleyball teams from Central Oregon in the past 10 years. At least one C.O. volleyball team has won a state championship every year in the past decade. Four times two different teams have won titles and eight have been claimed by Crook County.
