6A or 5A? – Looks like we are going to continue with six classifications in Oregon. It’s not settled, but that seems to be what is wanted, especially at the small school level.

Hermiston in Oregon or Washington? – My gut says Oregon for now, but I bet Hermiston joins a Washington league by 2020. We’ll have an update on June 4. Hermiston is a longtime opponent of the Bend schools and so this would be an interesting change.

What will the fourth high school in Bend mean for sports? – I don’t know yet, but I think it’ll be a great addition! I hope that it is added the same way that Mountain View and Summit were, where it creates new opportunities for athletes and coaches.

What league will the Bend schools end up in? – Right now it looks like either Salem or Portland.

You may want to get there early to grab a good seat for what looks like a battle for the Intermountain Conference, when the only two unbeaten IMC teams face off on Friday night at Summit High School at 7pm.

Summit, which started the season with a 42-14 loss at Class 6A Clackamas, has won four in a row and is 3-0 in IMC play. Bend is one of just four undefeated teams in all of Class 5A with a 5-0 record and is also 3-0 in the IMC.

The Storm have won the past three games, including a wild 17-14 game in 2013 that came down to the final play and ended in controversy. The last two games have not been close, with Summit pulling away. Bend had won the previous eight meetings before this streak and come in as one of the hottest teams in the state.

Some of the facts:
• Combined, they have beaten all the other IMC teams.
• Bend (211 points) is the second highest scoring Class 5A team behind Eagle Point (221).
• Summit is the 4th stingiest defense in 5A giving up 21.6 points per game.

Past Bend vs Summit Games
2015 – Summit 49, Bend 7
2014 – Summit 40, Bend 13
2013 – Summit 17, Bend 14
2012 – Bend 51, Summit 14
2011 – Bend 38, Summit 0
2010 – Bend 42, Summit 14
2009 – Bend 42, Summit 7
2008 – Bend 30, Summit 6
2007 – Bend 44, Summit 7
2006 – Bend 51, Summit 10
2005 – Bend 32, Summit 0
2004 – Summit 52, Bend 28

Summit’s Dawson Ruhl has emerged as candidate for state player of the year as a do it all running back who has even filled in at quarterback when the reigning Class 5A offensive player of the year John Bledsoe went down with an injury earlier this year. Bledsoe is back looks to cap off an impressive prep career before heading off to play football at Northern Arizona.

Bend is led offensively by one of the top running backs in 5A in Daniel Bazan. Quarterback Chase Lettenmaier and receiver Ryan Stanley have connected for over 300 yards and four of Lettenmaier’s nine touchdown passes.

Summit, which is ranked No. 1 in the latest OregonLive media poll in 2nd in the OSAA power rankings, just behind Wilsonville (5-0). Bend sits in 6th in the current power rankings.

La Salle Prep, a private school in Portland, made the move from the 4A classification to the larger 5A this year, and it appears to be where they belong. Aside from football, all of the Falcon’s teams made it to the postseason.

La Salle is the second-smallest school in 5A with just 676 students, only Eugene’s Marist (also a private school) is smaller with 527 students.

Here’s how La Salle has done this fall:
PLACING @ STATE
Volleyball – 2nd in state
Football – Did not qualify (1-8 overall)
Boys Soccer – 3rd
Girls Soccer – 4th

BIGGEST GAME – Mountain View @ Springfield
No. 3 Mountain View travels to No. 6 Springfield. This is the biggest matchup in 5A football. The Cougars are 3-0, while the Millers are 2-1 with a 28-12 loss last week to Hermiston.
MV by 14

TOUGHEST CHALLENGE FOR AN IMC TEAM- Ridgeview @ Ashland
Ashland is 3-0 and beat Summit 35-14 last week @ Summit. 2-1 Ridgeview has momentum, but the No. 2 Grizzlies looked really good last week.
Ashland by 21

BIGGEST WIN – Summit @ The Dalles
The Dalles have been shutout twice this season, 50-0 to Molalla and 61-0 to Redmond. Summit is capable of scoring a lot of points.
Summit by 49

HIGHEST SCORING GAME – Redmond @ Hood River Valley
Redmond leads the state in scoring, HRV lost to Ridgeview last week 61-51… don’t be surprised if this one goes over 100 combined points. The Panthers are averaging just under 60 points per game this season and are 3-0 and ranked in the state’s top ten (8).
Redmond by 14

LEARN THE MOST – Bend @ Pendleton
Lots of common opponents for IMC teams… but not good ones. Pendleton is 2-1 with a 41-19 loss @ Summit. This will be a good comparison of Bend and Summit. Bend is riding two-straight shutouts, having out scored their opponents 70-0 in those games.
Bend by 14

STAT LEADER - Derek Brown, Redmond
He’s been doing it all year, I’d guess Brown goes for over 200 yards and four touchdowns.

BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE – Jason Garcia, Summit
The junior running back has had good games already, I’m predicting a huge game tonight from the shifty back for the Storm.

I predict that IMC teams go a combined 4-1 tonight.
