Do you know what Central Oregon high school sport won the most state championships in the past decade?

The criteria:
• Must be an OSAA sanctioned sport.
• Central Oregon schools (Bend, Mountain View, Summit, Redmond, Ridgeview, Crook County, Madras, Sisters, La Pine, Culver, Gilchrist, Trinity, Central Christian).

A close second place was volleyball with 13 state championships from six different schools. But the winningest sport was wrestling, with 15 titles from three different schools.
Culver has nine wrestling titles in the past decade under coach J.D. Alley and Crook County has five under coach Jake Huffman. The other title came last year from La Pine and coach Aaron Flack.

Look for Wrestling to continue its impressive run, with Mountain View making a run at the Class 6A large school title in 2020. Crook County, Culver and La Pine should continue to shine.

It is really impressive to have six different Central Oregon schools win state volleyball titles. Crook County tops that list with four under legendary coach Rosie Honl.

Summit boys 3rd. Nate Bonetto wins No. 1 Singles title!

The Oregon Tennis Tournament, formerly known as “The Jesuit Tournament” features eight of the top boys tennis teams in Class 6A. With Summit’s move to 6A, they entered this year’s tournament for the first time in nearly a decade showed quite well.

Nate Bonetto, a sophomore for Summit, beat two-time defending Class 6A champion Peter Murphy of Jesuit in the final.

At No. 1 doubles, Ryan Abbott and David Feldman reached the final, falling to Lincoln.

The Ravens of Ridgeview are a perfect 9-0 on the season, including a 41-0 (according to the official OSAA website… could that be a typo?) win over Wilsonville back on March, 19th.

Ridgeview is the top-ranked Class 5A team in the state by OSAA power rankings. They are coached by Sandy Fischer, who was a longtime, lots of wins, coach at Oklahoma State University. (see article in link)

Last season Ridgeview reached the state quarterfinals.

The Lava Bears 9-1 and second to only Jesuit in the Class 6A baseball power rankings. Last year Bend reached the state semifinals of Class 5A baseball. The reigning 6A-state champions are Westview of the Metro League.

Bend has won seven games in a row and outscored their opponents 86-31 on the season.

It’s so cool that middle schools have cross country teams now. They didn’t when I was a middle schooler at Pilot Butte back in the 90s.

The junior high racers just wrapped up their district championships. Here are the results.

Central Oregon has had unprecedented success in high school cross country and with the middle school programs continued growth, I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

The Storm and Lava Bears finished 2nd and 3rd in league respectively in their first season of Class 6A volleyball. They’ll both host home playoff matches. You can see the Brackets on the OSAA website.

The move to 6A has fit the Summit Storm soccer programs well, as both the boys and girls varsity teams went undefeated in league to claim the conference titles.
